My New Design Life

Last week I had the pleasure of beginning my new job with Boga Design here in Calgary. After working nearly a year as an in-house graphic designer at M Private Residences, I’m looking forward to working in an agency setting.

The e-Grave/Louder Than Ten Years

Before my stint at M, I had been running my own little sign and design shop. The problem I found with running a business is that it leaves very little time for actual creative work. I’m not even close to a point in my life or career where I’m ready to push design to the back of the bus for things like accounting or administration. I ran the company since age 19 before reaching major career burn out at 24 years old. My creativity and interest became more stagnant as I was forced to devote more time into business development. It was a very ominous and depressing time that prompted me to close up shop and find a career change where I could get back to focusing on what I love… design.

The M Months

Working as an in-house designer for M was an interesting transition for me. I hadn’t had a boss since working as a photographer at Sears Portrait Studio after graduating high school. It was amazing to be free of accounting, business development, and customer service able to focus on my design work. Those eight months were filled with intense study, experimentation, and inspiration that never would have happened if I was still working solo and I think my designs are really starting to show it. At the end of August this year, I arrived from my honeymoon only to find out that the whole marketing department was being laid off. I couldn’t have been happier.

The Boga Future

Noob While I got to work with some wonderful people and had the chance to beef up some of my design chops while working for M, I could not wait to get out and design for more than one brand again. After being let go, I immediately met with Muni of Boga Design over drinks and was offered to join the team. This is my first agency job and I have the honour of working with three other incredibly talented designers that have welcomed me with open arms. We’ve got some great projects coming down the pipe and I am ecstatic to be a part of this group.

The last year has been utterly amazing. I’ve never felt so free, so creative, and so excited about design and life in general. I’m looking forward to experiencing the agency life and can’t wait to see this new life chapter develop.

I think nothing can top being a designer in an agency. You’re surrounded by creative people who speak the same language as you, which means collaboration, inspiration, support, mentorship etc. In-house can be fun too, if you’re lucky enough to be in a fairly large design team. But usually you are a minority among corporate people with interests other than design. I have never freelanced, but I guess I would definitely miss the collaboration aspect.
